Re: Charity Walk – Cape Town to Hermanus – November 2011

Three old men have decided that it is time to do something challenging for charity!

Between 20th and 26th November 2011 we will be walking along the coast from Muizenberg to Hermanus, a distance of more than 160kilometers.

The charity we have chosen is Operation Smile. For only R5,500.00, Operation Smile can facilitate an operation on a child born with a cleft palate or cleft lip which will give that child his or her God given right to a smile.

We approach you to sponsor us. We have an ambitious goal of reaching R100,000.00 and would value your help in reaching this objective. We would ask you to contribute a minimum of R100.00 but larger donations would be most welcome. A donation will qualify you to be listed on our “Smile List” to be posted on Facebook. No amounts donated will be listed.

The banking details for contributions are as follows:

Account name                                   Cipla Miles for Smiles
Bank                                                      ABSA
Account No                                        4069753145
Account type                                     Cheque
Branch                                                  Santyger

Please will you:
-                      Use ICAN as your reference
-                      Ensure that your name is included
-                      Email a copy of the deposit to markw@stbb.co.za

For further information on the event, or an easier method of donating, please click on http://www.milesforsmiles.co.za/component/content/article/104-hermanus-walk.html
where you will find links to our Facebook site and Blog and ‘ready-to-go’ donation buttons.

We would like people to walk a morning, afternoon or even a full day with us on any of the six days. We hope a large number will walk the last stretch, from Hawston to Hermanus, with us on the morning of 26th November 2011. Please call one of us at any time for further details on this.

With kind regards

Mark Westcott (083 270 7919)
Struan Buchanan (083 264 1910)
Peter Hofmeyr (082 481 7351)

Training update.

So far we have been on schedule with our training walks and are doing around 40-50km per week. We will so increase that to about 50-60km so by the time we start our walk we'll be as fit as fiddles!
We do a few walks along the road and once or twice a week we do mountain walks. But by far the most enjoyable are the long beach walks we do on the weekends. On Saturday 1st October, Struan and Pete walk about 22km from Muizenberg to beyond the Strandfontein Pavillion with the dogs. Mark was in Hermanus so was unable to join us.
After we turned around we decided to have a rest at the pavillion and have something to eat and drink. We met Paul there who promised to have a cup of coffee ready for us on the 1st day of our walk to Hermanus. Paul is in charge of the local lifeguards at Strandfontein and is clearly in control of their training. The kids are in good shape, swim beautifully and appear to be passionate about their lifesaving. There was a very chilly wind coming from the sea which didn't deter them from their training in the water.

We need more kids like that. And more Pauls, too!!

The iCAN Challenge - Cape Town to Hermanus

The iCAN Challenge – Cape Town to Hermanus.
At a combined age of over 150 years, three ‘extreme athletes’ (Mark Westcott, Struan Buchanan & Pete Hofmeyr) will be undertaking a walk from Cape Town to Hermanus along the coast to raise funds for Miles for Smiles (Operation Smile South Africa), a CIPLA initiative. The walk will start at Muizenberg on 20th November and finish in Hermanus on 26th November.

Operation Smile South Africa arranges corrective surgery on children born with cleft lips and cleft palates.
For every R5,500.00 we can raise, Operation Smile can facilitate facial surgery on a child and give them their God-given right to a smile. This simple operation takes just 45 minutes and will change the child’s life forever!
Cleft lips and cleft palates are the fourth most common birth defects in the world and are typically corrected shortly after a baby’s birth in areas with sufficient access to health care. However, for many children in rural areas around the world, medical treatment is not available. Often these children cannot eat, speak, or breathe properly. Due to low self-esteem, as well as feelings of isolation, these children often live as social outcasts.
·         In as little as 45 minutes, one cleft lip surgery can change a child's life forever.
·         Approximately one in every 750 babies in Africa is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate.
·         A cleft lip or cleft palate operation and follow up care costs approximately R5,500.00
·         Operation Smile South Africa has treated over 1650 children since 2006.
·         Since 1982, more than 150 000 children and young adults have been treated by thousands of Operation Smile volunteers worldwide and thousands of healthcare professionals have been trained globally.
Please click on our link where you will find more information as well as details on how to support our walk by donating to Operation Smile: http://www.milesforsmiles.co.za/component/content/article/104-hermanus-walk.html. When donating, please use ‘iCAN’ as the reference.
You can also find us on Facebook: ‘Cape Town to Hermanus’.
Thanking you in advance,
Mark, Struan and Pete.
